In June, a total of 120,623 people in the United States filed for personal bankruptcy.  Compared to a month before, this is a 6.6 percent drop.

A professor at the University of Illinois College of Law specializing in bankruptcy estimates that personal bankruptcies will be 5 to 10 percent lower this year than last year.  In 2010, 1.56 million personal bankruptcies were filed in the U.S.  Experts estimate 1.46 million personal bankruptcies will be filed by the end of this year.

Almost 70 percent of personal bankruptcies filed so far this year have been chapter 7 bankruptcies.  Chapter 13 bankruptcies have accounted for a little more than 27 percent of this year’s personal bankruptcy filings.
